Sennheiser HD 4.20s Around-Ear Closed Back Headphones – Black : The first thing i noticed about these is that the audio cable comes out of the right hand side, unlike every other pair of headphones i’ve had where it comes out of the left. As they look very symmetrical, this has caused me to inadvertently put them on the wrong way round on a few occasions, although it’s hard to notice this if you’re listening to pop music. The cable cannot be switched to the other side, which i thought would be annoying given that the thing i plug it into is usually on my left, but the cable doesn’t seem to get in the way of eating or anything like that. The audio cable is also a bit shorter than the average headset, but that suits me just fine, as i hate having too much excess cable flowing all over my desk and it makes them easier to use on the go. In terms of comfort, these are really nice. The ear pads look a bit small, but they are so incredibly plush that i can’t feel any discomfort at all, unlike some other headphones where it feels like your ears are being squashed against your head. These are without a doubt the nicest ear pads i’ve come across – they are so soft and have a lot of travel. They also form a very effective seal against background noise without requiring any active noise cancellation. This is so effective that it took me a few days to get used to them, as the reduced ambient noise gives a kind of underwater sensation, where noises inside your own body (swallowing, coughing, etc) seem noticeably louder. Once you get used to this, it no longer becomes noticeable and you really appreciate how much background noise they cut out.
